"Another characteristic of the buildings in Maputo city, is that they all seem to have been erected on the same day, because they have relatively little difference in terms of style and age. As I said at the beginning, between the decades 30 and 70 from the 20th centure, there was an architectonic boom in Maputo during the colonial period when Mozambique was a mere Portuguese province. Modern architecture was expanding in the world with the international style and Portuguese architects had a wide space on the colonies to apply their theories and new construction techniques. Hence it seems that every building is an experimentation, seems to answer a new question, each of these architects wanted to show his value, at the time Portuguese colony cities like Luanda and Maputo were modern and recent cities, drawn with ruler and square, planned from the beginning and where very little was left to chance. Como eu disse no princípio entre os anos 30 e 70 ouve um boom arquictetónica na cidade de Maputo no tempo colonial quando Moçambique era uma mera província Portuguesa. A arquitectura moderna estava em expansão no mundo com o estilo internacional e os arquitectos Portugueses tiveram nas colónias um vasto campo para aplicar as suas teorias e novas técnicas de construção. Daí que cada edifício parece uma experimentação, parece responder a uma nova questão, cada um desses arquitectos quis mostrar o seu valor, as cidades das colónias como Luanda e Maputo eram cidades recentes, traçadas a régua e esquadro como custuma dizer-se, planejadas desde o princípio e onde pouca coisa foi deixada ao acaso. E aí temos Maputo, cheia de edifícios belos e diversificados todos eles partilhando similiridades. Um fenómeno muito pouco usual..."

"...Look at this set of four buildings... Look at the magnitude of this construction... This is its first big quality. There are four huge boxes together... Now notice another aspect, see the balconies of the first building...? They are small curved and arched balconies that are repeated in a pattern with a mathematic strictness and they make a geometric play with the wall inside."

Maputo Balconies/ Varandas de Maputo
"One of the major characteristics of our city’s architecture is the diversification of the balconies. Most buildings are boxes but these balconies are the element of ornamentation. The main purpose of buildings is to be populated and it is sometimes difficult for architects to make them functional and at the same time beautiful works of art as architecture should be. Some architects say for example that a building where people reside has beauty in itself only for the fact that they have built it and people can confortably live there, the form, that's the shape of the building, followed its function. And also the city itself is beautiful, the urban world has a beauty of its own by simply existing, the mere fact of being a construction opposed to nature already makes it beautiful. The balcony, these diverse balconies that we are passing in various types and formats, in a world where architecture has to be first and foremost functional, was the only way many architects have found to express themselves. Hence they have used various kinds: round, stuck, long, symmetrical. If it were not so, all the balconies would be equal and all buildings would be the same which in truth they are, they are nothing more than boxes where people live."
"...Uma das maiores características da arquitectura da nossa cidade é a diversificação das varandas. A maioria dos edifícios são caixas mas essas varandas, esses pequenos balcões, são o elemento de ornamentação. O objectivo principal dos edifícios é serem habitados e as vezes é difícil aos arquictetos fazerem edifícios funcionais e ao mesmo tempo belas obras de arte como a arquictetura deve ser. Alguns arquitectos afirmam por exemplo que só o facto de eles construírem um edifício para as pessoas morarem esse edifício já tem beleza em si, a forma, que é a beleza do edifício, seguiu a sua função. E também a cidade em si já é bela, o mundo urbano tem uma beleza que lhe é própria simplesmente por existir, o simples facto de ser uma construção que se opõe a natureza já torna-lhe belo. A varanda, esses balcões diversificados que estamos a passar em vários tipos e formatos, num mundo em que a arquictetura tem de ser antes de mais nada funcional, foi a forma que vários arquitectos encontraram de se expressar. Daí eles terem usado vários tipos, redondas, coladas, longas, simétricas. Se não tivesse sido assim, todas as varandas seriam iguais e todos os edifícios seriam os mesmos o que na verdade são, não passam de caixas onde as pessoas vivem..."
Maputo Streets/ Ruas de Maputo
"This avenue, as most of the avenues and streets of Maputo, is flanked with acacia trees. Acacias with long branches that perfume the streets of Maputo in the early morning hours. Acacias that soak the city with a sap that gives it a natural touch, reminding it of where it comes from and where it is. This is how Maputo is fighting the artificiality of modern cities.
Maputo has a delightfully consistent architecture and one of the best examples is the regular and constant distribution of acacias along its streets. The acacias in conjunction with the buildings from the Portuguese modernism, give a nice impression of déjà vu on its landscaping, a structural unit in such a way that the city can be so easily defined as the City of Acacias. They are the heart of Maputo, take the acacias away from the city and overnight you will have built another city.
And the smell of Maputo’s acacias, that odor that causes poetic nostalgia, it is perhaps, like the city's tourism department would say, one of the best postcards that the city has to offer.
I don’t know what to say of a city, cities are increasingly similar, there are some lucky ones that have something that differentiates them, Maputo has a forest of acacias. "

Acácias com ramos fartos e compridos que perfumam nas primeiras horas matutinas as ruas Maputenses. Estas Acácias que embebem a cidade de uma seiva que lhe dá um toque natural, relembrando-lhe de onde ela vem e aonde ela está. É assim como Maputo luta contra o artificialismo das cidades modernas, como sobrevive a mecânica e a técnica destruidora de tudo o que é natural.
Maputo possui uma arquitectura deliciosamente coerente e um dos melhores exemplos é a distribuição regular e constante das acácias pelas suas ruas. Elas são a alma de Maputo, tirem as acácias de Maputo e do dia para noite terão erguido outra cidade.
E o cheiro das Acácias de Maputo, esse poético odor causador de saudade, é talvez, como diria o departamento turístico da cidade, um dos maiores postais que ela tem para oferecer.

It is the place where the square culminates. Moreover, this building can represent all this city with dignity. I believe that if it were just a little more solemn, it would lose its beauty, but no. "...É uma composição magnífica do arquitecto Carlos Santos que se estende pela Praça. É como se toda esta praça da Indepedência tivesse sido feita para receber este edifício. É o lugar onde a praça culmina. Além do mais, este edifício consegue representar condignamente toda esta cidade. Acredito que se ele fosse só um pouco mais solene perderia a beleza, mas não. As suas paredes maciças e nuas como se ele fosse talhado em um só bloco de pedra, estão revestidas em semili granito e dão-lhe um ar de rei da cidade. E quando olho para ele não consigo parar de pensar nele como a mãe na sua parte central elevada e os seus dois filhos, nas duas partes mais baixas.
